Gerald Steinbrenner is an active private eye, dealing
mostly in missing persons files. His specialty is locating missing children, although he does take other cases. Its just that
these other cases dont cause him to go the great lengths he does for the little ones. The high rate of unsolved cases, inherent
to the field, has tempered his enthusiasm a bit. His last two cases a teenage boy, Michael Flanders, who had run off to Holywood,
to become a star, and Melissa Star, a thirteen year old who had been abducted by her biological father- had been resolved
succesfully, so it was a relatively cheerful mr. Steinbrenner who drove his car into Hidden Falls. He was going to spend the
night here, before resuming his journey back to the city. Melissa had been picked up by her tearful parents, so he could take
his own sweet time getting back.
----
Gerald grew up in a small town in Arizona. It didnt take long for the
young man to start dreaming of bigger things than his hometown could contain. So when he got the chance to go to college in
Boston, he took it and never looked back, despite never finishing his first year of Law school. Instead of going back, he
had a whole range of jobs, from waiter at a truck stop at the edge of town to telemarketeer pushing shoeshine kits. The last
job he held before turning to the business he is in now, was at the dairy counter of a big supermarket. After several months
of performing his mindnumbing tasks he noticed how many childrens faces wound up on the back of milk cartons. Gerald called
his parents to tell them he finally knew what he was going to do with his life. And no, he was not coming back to work in
his dads hardware store. He was going to be a private eye. Yes, a private investigator. Why? Because such people do an important
job (note that Gerald didnt say he was going to do it for the children). His mother was supportive as always, while his dad
pointed out that Mark was entering his final year at Law school, something he should have done 2 years ago. Gerald hung up
after promising to call again in a few days.
Private investigator school at the Detective Training Institute, which
he found on the internet, taught him the basics in less than six months. What followed were several years working for various
agencies including a couple of assignments for The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Steinbrenners Lost
and Found, Geralds current agency, is one he founded himself. He is currently also the only active agent, though a part-time
secretary, Anne Rich, runs the office when he is out in the field. Gerald finds Anne an attractive woman, but he would
never get involved with a coworker, so there is nothing going on between them, aside from a vague sense of regret, which becomes
most prominent when Gerald has had too much to drink and lies awake in an unfamiliar motelroom.
Gerald still goes
to visit his folk for thanksgiving and christmas every year, events which his younger, and more succesful brother Mark, who
is a state attorney back in Arizona, uses to show off. Mark cant figure out why Gerald doesnt display more envy, unable to
understand Geralds dream of making a difference.
----
Gerald often drives rental cars, prefering reliability
over looks and comfort. His usual place to spend the night when in the field is some cheap motel or B&B. He doesn't smoke
anymore (quit when he started his training at DTI), but he does occasionally enjoy some whiskey (straight, no ice) and when
he does, chances are he'll get mildly drunk and somewhat depressed and feeling lonely. Gerald doesnt like living in the
past. He likes to take it easy, and enjoys a hot cup of coffee with his morning news.
